o
1883, 2¢ Washington, pale red brown, Special Printing (Scott 211B), an incredible gem with gorgeous centering, and a neat duplex cancel, Extremely Fine, with 2025 P.F. certificate graded XF 90. Unpriced in Scott or SMQ as used. Scott is $450 for mint o.g., SMQ is $675 for XF 90 mint o.g. hinged.
Estimate $1,000 - 1,500

Nearly all 19th century special printings are much scarcer used than their unused counterparts. The Scott catalog notes "while use of No. 211B for postage was legal, actual usage was rare". This lovely stamp is a true Gem of U.S. Philately.

For reference, a Fine example (way off-center and in much lower quality than the beautiful example offered here) sold for $850 in a 2018 Siegel auction. The issue is so very scarce used that we have not been able to find any other comparable recent realizations.
