Auction 78

Lot 128

o

1898, $2 Trans-Miss. (Scott 293), a fantastically choice gem with near perfect centering, faintly canceled at top left (it appears mint at first glance), Extremely Fine to Superb, with 1995 P.F. and 2005 P.S.E. certificates, the latter graded XF-SUP 95. Scott $1,000. SMQ $7,700.
Estimate $4,000 - 6,000

Only 1 grades higher (at 98) in PSE's Population Report, with just 6 others sharing this lofty grade.

Brookman notes "the $2 is not easy to obtain well-centered as many of these stamps seem to be perforated close to the top and its color is such that it cancels rather badly. This combination makes fine used copies difficult to obtain. I consider it more difficult to obtain in choice used condition than any of the high values of the Columbian issue."

While the top value of the Trans-Mississippi Issue is occasionally found well-centered, it almost always has a heavy cancel. This sound example with a light cancel is a true condition rarity.
