Lote 68 /o/ Serbia, 1866-1943, the magnificent collection in 4 volumes, formed by the late George McNamara. One of the finest collections of this area ever formed, meticulously collected by an experienced professional philatelist over many years. Volume 1 contains stamps and a few covers from the period 1866 to 1903, including a huge amount of shade, printing and perforation varieties, bisects, unlisted imperfs, cancel varieties and used on piece, blocks of 4 and larger and some gutter blocks. Essentially every issue in this period is represented in depth. Scott listed stamps alone come to over $12,000 catalog value, not counting imperfs etc and the 7 covers. Best are the 1866 Vienna Printings perf 12, including the 10p mint ($1600), 20p mint ($1350) and all 3 values used including varieties. Centering is uniformly Fine to Very Fine or better, gum ranges from no gum on a few early issues to mostly hinged to quite a few never hinged (especially blocks). Only a very few faults noted, mainly on less expensive issues. Volume 2 contains postal cards and telegraph receipts, and seems to be reasonably complete (or at least nearly so) per Higgins & Gage. The cards are mainly mint. Higgins & Gage prices are rather old but there might be $1000 or so in catalog value in this section. Volume 3 contains issues from the 1905 to 1920 period, including many varieties, blocks, proofs, part perfs, imperfs etc., plus postage dues, newspaper stamps, a large section of revenues (seldom seen and carefully annotated per printing and type) and 23 covers, some used domestically, some going abroad. Scott listed items in this volume come to about $1000 catalog value. Volume 4 contains the Postes Serbes overprints of 1917 complete, some mint (the three high values are NH), most used, many in pairs and showing varieties such as different angles of the overprint. Yvert catalogs these at €13,615 (approximately $13,300). They are all signed, some several times, by E. Diena and others. This volume also contains an apparently complete selection of the German WWII Occupation issues, mostly mint, including several blocks and souvenir sheets. Total Michel catalog value for this group comes to approximately €3,500 ($3,430). Best is Michel Nr. 5II pair, NH, signed with cert, Michel catalog value €800 (approximately $800). Fully imaged on the web, each volume in a separate PDF. Even the most advanced collector is unlikely ever to see a finer collection of this area. Total catalog value of the collection is over $30,000 + unlisted varieties, proofs and covers. Estimate $3,500 - 5,000. |
