This post was established on January 15, 1847 by Aron Swarts, who had been employed at the U.S. Post Office at 6 Chatham Square. The U.S. branch closed and Swarts opened the next day in the same building. He called his service at "Branch Post Office." In early 1849, Swarts acquired the Bouton's City Dispatch Post. In about March 1856 Swarts sold this business to Benjamin Lockwood.
The postmarks of Swarts' Post Office are often found on stampless covers, as this post carried large quantities of mail without using adhesive stamps
