MacArthur, Douglas, General of the US Army and Army Chief of Staff (1880-1964); commanded US forces in the Pacific theater during World War II, famously promising to return when forced to evacuate the Philippines, which US troops later helped liberate. First Day Cover Signed "Douglas MacArthur" at top left, Manila, 3/3/1948, for the first day of issue of Republic of the Philippines stamps bearing his image, on the third anniversary of his famous return to the islands.
