1861, 3¢ Washington, rose, used on "The Snake of South Carolina" multicolored patriotic cover (Scott 65), depicting an American eagle destroying the Confederate flag and 13 secessionist serpents, with Union Flag and Andrew Jackson in background, a portrait of Calhoun at right, Due 3 cents handstamp at top and a red wonderfully struck July 22 Boston Mass c.d.s. at bottom. The imprint on back reads "The destruction of the Snake of South Carolina, Nullification and Secession, and all her progeny by the National Bird. To portray the ultimate overthrow of the evil power, which strikes at the life of the National Government, is the object of this cut" and Harback & Sons copyright notice. In excellent, near-pristine condition, a wonderfully choice example of this rare design (unlisted by Walcott and Weiss), Very Fine to Extremely Fine.
