1856, 5¢ Jefferson, red brown (Scott 12), cut to shape prior to use, paying the 5¢ rate via British packet on a folded letter sheet from Annapolis, Md. to a surgeon on board the U.S. Steam Frigate Susquehanna, stationed at Sardinia, Italy, with Boston, Calais, Paris and Genova transit cancels. Several partly repaired edge tears, Very Good to Fine, a very scarce usage, only 8 covers are recorded from this correspondence to the Susquehanna. Scott prices #12 on a domestic cover at $1200, used to France at $1600; the much scarcer usage to Italy is unpriced.
