1857, 5¢ Jefferson, red brown, type I (Scott 28), a horizontal strip of 3 with great margins and deep rich color, tied by two strikes of "New Orleans La. Jun. 1858" postmark to a folded letter sheet to Bordeaux, France, marked "by the First Steamer", with "New York PAID Jun 23" in red, French arrival datestamp (Jul 5), and 3 French backstamps. Recipient's name cut out, Fine to Very Fine overall, an attractive usage of the 5¢ Jefferson in the scarce red brown shade. Scott prices a used strip of 3 off-cover at $4,000, on cover is unpriced.
