Lot 211 Political Memorabilia, Puck Magazine, political cartoons, 1876-1918. Puck was the first successful humor magazine in the United States of colorful cartoons, caricatures and political satire of the issues of the day. It was founded in 1876 as a German-language publication by Joseph Keppler, an Austrian immigrant cartoonist. Puck's first English-language edition was published in 1877, covering issues like New York City's Tammany Hall, presidential politics, and social issues of the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Artists represented are Keppler, Gillam, Pughe, Ehrhart and Opper to name a few. These were printed weekly. Some of these sell on eBay for $10 to $50 each! Three magazine covers from 1882, '85 and '86 which are fairly rare plus approximately 70 unique colorful centerfolds. Most in good to excellent condition. We have imaged a few to give a flavor of the lot. Estimate $300 - 400. |
