Lot 109![]() Japan, 1901, Shipwreck Mail, a cover salvaged from the S.S. City of Rio de Janeiro, addressed to Germany and marked "Via America", with a faint Tokio postmark on front and three backstamps on the reverse including 3-line "Feb 22 1901 Shipwreck". The cover shows the expected transit damage. A scarce item, accompanied by a Wikipedia article discussing the wreck. Estimate $150 - 200 The ship sank just outside the entrance to San Francisco Bay while inward bound from Hong Kong. Fewer than 85 of the 220 passengers and crew survived. The ship lies in 87 meters of water just off the Golden Gate and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. |
