Lot 42 |
o Japan, 1996-1991, phenomenal postmarks collection, containing thousands of beautifully postmarked stamps neatly mounted in 3 specialized albums. Volumes 1 and 2 are titled "Comb Postmarks" (Japanese character postmarks) and volume 3 is titled "Swordguard Postmarks" (Latin character postmarks). There are numerous better stamps with Scott catalog values up to about $185, including the 1908, 1914 and 1937 Empress Jingo high values and many better commemoratives from the 1910 to 1930's. And then the huge number of choice postmarks into the modern period, with definitives, high values, commemoratives, national parks and airmail, apparently about 50% complete for the period. Which is a considerable achievement, for only stamps with clear, neatly struck c.d.s. cancels were collected. There is some modest duplication of the same stamps but with different postmarks. Condition throughout is exceptional, nearly all being well centered and Very Fine. Catalog values probably reach $1000 to $2000 but these stamps, in such outstandingly choice condition, carry a huge premium. A small sampling has been imaged. Shipping weight 8.5 lbs / 3.9 kilos. Estimate $500 - 750 Collecting such choice postmarks is extremely popular in Japan. It is most unusual to see such a wonderful collection in America .
