Lot 1234
/o
Worldwide, 1849-1898, an intriguing and unique collection, formed in the 19th century and mounted in 4 French 19th century albums, with a printed date of 1883, loose-leaf (6 x 7-5/8 inches / 15 x 19.5 cm), with pre-printed names and spaces for countries, even a map of France at the beginning (showing German occupation of Alsace-Lorraine and thus clearly made in the period 1872-1919). Mostly Europe with a smattering of other areas (Egypt and Australian States mainly). All are on piece - apparently cut from envelopes and not soaked off. Some are unused, which means unused without gum. Wide range of values present with some better items including:
Russia #2-4 (1858 issue, 10k, 20k and 30k, Fine used, c.v. $4,375);
Monaco #1-9 (1885 issue, 1c to 1fr, unused without gum, c.v. $3,313);
Papal States #12, 14-18 (1867 issue, 2c and 5c to 80c, neat cancels and 4 margins, c.v. $1,355);
Germany #8, 25, 28 (1872 Small Shield 2kr with boxed cancel, Large Shield 9kr with c.d.s. cancel, and 1874, 9kr surcharge with c.d.s. cancel, c.v. for the trio $965);
Switzerland # 15 & 19 (1854 Helvetia issue, 5r and 40r, c.d.s. cancels, c.v. $535);
Romania #22-23 (1865 issue, 2pa and 5 pa, used, c.v. $525).
Plus there are hundreds of dollars in catalog values in early issues for each of these countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, German States, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal and Turkey.
Plus numerous revenues from France and Great Britain (which we didn't count).
And probably thousands of dollars in catalog value in stamps too damaged to be counted (space fillers perhaps?).
Plus a small stock book of duplicates.
The serious collector could have months of fun sorting these out - or simply keeping it as an intact collection from the dawn of stamp collecting. Usual mixed condition but we counted in the catalog value only those that appeared sound and salable. Definitely a remarkable lot - check out some of the scans on the web. Scott approximately $15,000.
Estimate $1,200 - 1,800.
