1852, 1¢ blue, type IV (Scott 9), tied by Savanna, GA town cancel on an 1856 folded letter mailed to Providence RI. The contents is a "Savanna Republican Prices Current"; a handstamp identifies the sender, Very Fine to Extremely Fine, an historic piece of philately knowing that it is an early cover once held in President Roosevelt's hands, ex-President Franklin D. Roosevelt, an avid stamp collector; a red stamp on the inside reads, "From the Franklin D Roosevelt Collection Auction Feb., April, 1946 by H.R. Harmer Inc., N.Y. Scott $110.

1851, 3¢ orange brown, type II (Scott 10A), a lovely example tied to an 1851 folded letter by a complete rounded black grid paired with a red New Orleans c.d.s.; the ink shows through the exterior page of the folded letter meaning that the exterior page was used to write the letter, Very Fine to Extremely Fine, a rare 3¢ circular rate for 1,000-1,500 miles. Scott $1,000+.

1852, 3¢ dull red, type II (Scott 11A), with a huge right margin, tied by Bangor, Maine PAID c.d.s. on an 1855 folded letter sheet document dated May 30th, from the state of Maine appointing Elijah Comins to the office of Justice by the Secretary of State (Alden Jackson); an official government document of the time preprinted on the reverse of the letter sheet, Very Fine to Extremely Fine, a great item with added interest! 1859, 10¢ green, type V (Scott 35), used on a cross-border cover to Canada, tied by a beautifully struck c.d.s from Otter River, MA, carried by coastal steamer from Boston (red U. States oval) to Nova Scotia (left corner handstamp); then traveled by Canadian post to Lennoxville (Quebec) reverse handstamp, and then on to Huntingville; a great cover with lovely markings, Very Fine.

1861, 3¢ rose (Scott 65), used in 1866 with a socked-on-the-nose PAID cancel plus two supplemental postal markings that tell a story; one is "ADVERTISED" in an oblong frame and the other is "UNCLAIMED" in bold, the advertised marking indicates no one came to the post office to pick this letter up so it was publicly advertised, usually in the local paper; after this the letter was still not claimed, so the post office marked it as such; cover is backstamped with "Dover, N.H.", Very Fine to Extremely Fine.

1861, 3¢ rose (Scott 65), tied by a complete strike of "FREE" while boasting another complete strike of a discontinued post office (DPO) Groveland, Mass; this was unusual as stamp devices for free postage were reserved for specific applications, so in this case, the free stamp was probably just handy so it was used the cancel the stamp, Extremely Fine, not often seen.

1861, 10¢ yellow green (Scott 68), tied by a well struck 19mm 11 bar grill postmark paying the 10¢ rate from the West Coast to the East Coast in the year 1863; as indicated by manuscript "Via Panama" this cover traveled the Panama Route - up until 1860 this route offered the fastest method of mail travel coast to coast in the United States; a very fresh cover, Very Fine.

1873, 3¢ Washington, C.B.N.C. printing (Scott 158), on a nice 1874 cover from American Association for the Advancement of Science / F. W. Putnam / Salem, Mass to William S. Vaux / Philadelphia, PA with a nice "Due 3" in a circle; a great cover from one scientist to another, Putnam was one of the earlliest anthropologists in the US and Vaux a notable mineralogist.

1883, 4¢ Jackson, diagonal bisect (Scott 211), used to pay the 2¢ rate, tied by a well struck 1897 cancel of New York and the flag; the cancel ties the bisect to the trimmed side which lends to its authenticity as a true use of a stamps bisect actually going through the mail; rare example, Very Fine, not listed in Scott.

1898, 2¢ Washington, type IV, red (Scott 279B), tied by two light cancels to this large, ornate and embossed Valentine cover mailed in 1899; the cover contains a lovely and colorful card with no tears which depicts a verse and drawing in blue; indeed a lovely and rare combination in such a large format, Very Fine to Extremely Fine.

In the 1850's "The New Yorker" published an article saying valentine cards were a very distasteful means of proclaiming your love, the article went further saying the cards were a fad and would eventually run their course; well - some 175 years later, the valentine card market is still booming!
