China, 1837 (Aug. 17), stampless letter from Canton to New York, USA, from Shepherd Wetmore to his cousin Samuel Wetmore in New York. The letter, carried privately by a ship captain as a courtesy, notes "original sent via Java"; it discusses opium, tea, silk and copper trading. A most interesting early commercial letter, Very Fine. China, 1838 (Mar. 7), stampless letter from Canton to London, England, addressed to Mr. Shepherd Wetmore, c/o Morrison Cryder & Co., marked "Private" and carried on the ship Golconda by the ship captain as a courtesy to one of the biggest American trading houses in Canton, China at that time. The letter was returned unopened from London to Canton, as the recipient has already left London. The letter was back in Canton a year later, in March 1839. Opened for display with trivial tear to the seal, Very Fine overall, a unique Canton-London-Canton round trip letter. Estimate $750 - 1,000 This 2½ page letter from Samuel Wetmore to his cousin (Wm) Shepherd Wetmore, discusses the desires and plans of their partner, Mr. Archer, to leave the firm with his share of capital and various commercial options for his departure. It includes the possibility of him getting the Wetmore House business in Lima, Peru. Finally the letter congratulates him on his marriage to Esther in 1837. The Wetmore family is somewhat famous - there is a reference in the Wikipedia (online) to William Shepard Wetmore. Further notes are included with the lot. There is much historical interest here! .
